Several websites and numerous hobbyists have already given their input on how personality types can be arranged into the four houses of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Add this to the list.
I do not take this seriously. I am writing it with serious intent, but I cannot defend it logically without looking like an arse. I’ll let someone else do the defending if this schema merits consideration.
While I am not going to be a fanatic about my little theory, I have spent sufficient time and effort. So I post my conclusions and hope to be done with the quest for the Sorting Hat methodology forever.
The socionics personality typing system is almost compatible with the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). I have biases about personality typing and I will attempt to explain them in as unbiased a manner as possible. When I was thirteen years old, I tested as INFP according to MBTI. My step-mother, a student at the time, administered a full length MBTI test to me in her kitchen. It turns out that she and most of her children share the same personality type as I do, even though we are not biologically related. When I compared socionics to MBTI, I found that I was IEI* (or INFp*). I therefore naively assume that all MBTI types translate to socionics with the same ease as my own, despite a plethora of evidence to the contrary. My weakness in either typing result is “extroverted thinking” or “logic” so please excuse my inability to formulate a rational statement of how MBTI and socionics differ.
I have worked out a chart of Hogwarts House and Personality Types. I expect there are mistakes in it. I’m drained mentally from all of the Extroverted Thinking that this requires to share my findings. Can I find a Conqueror to come along and help me out? Any ESTps out there are gladly welcomed to my crazy mind.
Here’s the best I can offer at present.
About House and Associated Traits
The Sorting Hat does not guarantee that types will be sorted properly into houses. This is a general schema of Hogwarts Sorting. The Hat often chooses to place people in other houses.
The breakdown according to Hogwarts Houses is the same as “Clubs” in socionics: Researchers, Socials, Humanists and Pragmatists. Other websites have broken down Houses into SJs, SPs, NTs and NFs. In Clubs, SFs and STs are separated. The Houses are sorted into compatible pairs (“mirrors”) matched with other compatible pairs who share the same iNtuition / Sensing and Logic (Thinking) / Ethics (Feeling) dichotomies.
About Typical Members by Personality Type
Major characters will be named in italics following each type whenever possible. The character typing is my own assertion, influenced by online research using many social networking sources.
Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta are “quadras”. A quadra contains the four personality types who have the greatest compatibility. Heavy and Light indicate the degree to which a pair fits the stereotype of the House or Club.
About Relationships Among Houses
A compatible relationship can be found between any of the Houses at Hogwarts. The most compatible relationships in the socion (the complete list of socionics types) are found in the same quadra. The highest compatibility between types are “dual” pairs which satisfy a “dual-seeking” facet of personalities.
At Hogwarts, a Dual partner is found in different House. This encourages inter-house relationships. In real life, relationships between “Mirror” types (the same-quadra pairing in a Club or House) are very common because people are drawn to the activity in these groups.
Moderately compatible relationships are found in a second quadra. The second quadra is based on the Rational / Irrational (also known as Judging / Perceiving) traits.
- Perceivingor Irrational types are compatible between quadras in this manner: Alphas and Deltas or Betas and Gammas.
- Judging or Rational type compatibility is divided between quadras as follows: Alphas and Betas or Gammas and Deltas.
In these extra-quadra relationships, there can be uncomfortable relationships between “asymmetrical” types. One partner will feel more distressed than another, due to asymmetrical functions of the psyche.

I haven’t found a truly ENTj “mad scientist who takes over the world” type in Harry Potter.
The favorite Hermione / Severus pairing in fan fiction is relatively incompatible. I am writing that pairing with a focus on showing the difficulties and the means of overcoming different preferences for processing information.

Please criticize. The chart above needs a rational look-over. See below for an explanation of what the MBTI and Socionics letters represent.
Middle Bar (Since it is not on the side, I cannot call it a Side Bar.)
MBTI and Socionics Lettering Chart
|Introversion / Extroversion dichotomy||I XXX or E XXX||XX I or XX E||Carl Jung recognized this dichotomy. In MBTI a person is labeled as “Introvert” or “Extrovert.” In socionics, the dichotomy explains how information is processed and does not describe the person. Intratrim or Extratrim is used to denote the strongest preference for processing information.|
|Introversion||I = Introvert||I = Intratrim|
|Extroversion||E = Extrovert||E = Extratrim|
|Intuition / Sensing dichotomy||X I XX or X SXX
These letters are always second in the order.
|I XX or S XX
X I X or X SXThe letter position shows the strength of the preference for processing information. First in order is strongest. Second is less strong.
|Jung recognized two different “irrational” ways of processing information.|
|Intuition||N = iNtuition||I = Intuitive|
|“Ne” is Extroverted Intuition.||EN X P = Extrovert X iNtuitive P
I N X J shows “Ne” as a secondary trait.
